International Orientation Draws Record 1,400 Students from 52 Countries
New international cohort welcomed with dedicated orientation programme including visa support workshops and buddy pairings.
Auckland Academy's International Orientation Programme concluded on Friday after a week of tailored events designed to help 1,400 new international students settle into life in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Students from 52 countries attended sessions covering academic expectations, health and wellbeing services, tenancy rights, and immigration obligations. The popular International Student Buddy Programme paired each newcomer with an experienced student for their first month on campus.
"Moving to a new country for study is one of the most courageous decisions a young person can make," said Director of International Student Support Dr. Ananya Sharma. "Our orientation is designed to turn anxiety into confidence."
Highlights included a pōwhiri (Māori welcome ceremony) on the University Marae, guided Auckland city tours, and a Taste of Aotearoa food festival showcasing New Zealand cuisine alongside dishes from participating students' home countries. Feedback surveys showed 93% of attendees rated the orientation as "very helpful" or "excellent."
