Rainbow Alliance Celebrates Two Years of LGBTQ+ Advocacy on Campus
Student-led organisation marks two years of building safe spaces, policy change, and community support.
The Auckland Academy Rainbow Alliance celebrated its second anniversary this week with a campus-wide Pride festival, marking two years of advocacy that has shaped the university's approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion.
Founded in 2020 by a group of six students during the university's first year of operation, the Rainbow Alliance has grown to over 60 members and played a key role in campus policy changes including the introduction of gender-neutral bathrooms, the addition of preferred name and pronoun fields in university systems, and inclusivity training for staff.
"When we started, we were building from scratch," said co-founder Lena Park. "Today, LGBTQ+ students can see themselves reflected in the fabric of this institution."
Events included panel discussions on intersectionality, a film screening series, and a rainbow flag raising on the main quad.
