Environmental Science Team Discovers New Marine Species

Deep-sea expedition reveals previously unknown organisms in Pacific waters.

A research team from Auckland Academy's Environmental Science Department has discovered three previously unknown marine species during a deep-sea expedition in the South Pacific. The discovery was made using advanced underwater drones capable of reaching depths of 4,000 meters.

The newly identified species include two invertebrates and one fish, all found near hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. The findings contribute to understanding of extreme environment ecosystems.

"These discoveries remind us how much we still have to learn about our oceans," said expedition leader Professor Mark Anderson. "Each new species tells us something about the planet's biodiversity and evolution."
