Auckland Academy Opens Its Doors — Then Pivots Online Amid COVID-19
New Zealand's newest university opens with 80 students, then rapidly transitions to online learning as the pandemic hits.
Auckland Academy officially opened in February 2020 with an inaugural class of 80 students across four undergraduate programs — only to face an unprecedented challenge weeks later as New Zealand entered lockdown in response to COVID-19.
The university completed a rapid transition to fully online learning, investing in video conferencing tools, upgrading its learning management system, and loaning laptops to students without devices at home.
"We could have delayed our launch, but we chose to adapt," said founding Chancellor Dr. Patricia Williams. "Our students showed remarkable resilience, and our small size actually became an advantage — we could move fast and support every student individually."
Faculty received intensive training on online pedagogy, and the university introduced flexible assessment policies for the remainder of the academic year.
